HODGE BECK

A project with AHH and Artlicks

exploring Herbert Read’s The Green Child 2022.

In the second part of Read’s novel, Sally, the green child of the book’s title, leads the protagonist by the hand and together they sink below the stream to a Utopian realm.

In response to The Green Child,  photographic imagery, videos of under and on the surface of the beck and a sound recording of the spring bursting into the stone trough down at the mill were installed in the yard buildings at Cow Syke Farm. In a stable, visitors were invited to gently drop clay press-moulded versions of maple seed heads into a rusted steel bowl half full of water, where they slowly dissolved. The video shown here is taken beneath the fast flowing water of Hodge Beck.
