Architectural Modelling
During the 1980’s I was employed by Dick Reid, Architectural Restorers, York on the remodeling of the ceiling of the banqueting hall at Châtelherault, Hamilton, Scotland. As one of two modellers I worked alongside the more experienced architectural sculptor Charles Gurrey.
All the clay model work took place in the York workshop and visits were made to several sites in Scotland to study other contemporary 18th century architectural plaster work by the artist plasterer Thomas Clayton.
The clay models we made were taken to Bradford where the plaster casts were then constructed.
Chatelherault is now a conference centre owned by South Lanarkshire Council.
The ceiling, destroyed in the 1960s through vandalism and weather exposure was a subject of debate during the 1980s about conservation and preservation , restoration and reconstruction.
Châtelherault went through a transformation that took it from being a preserved to a reconstructed building over several years.
